STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU women's basketball team traveled across the Verrazano Bridge to take on Wagner College in the NEC Semifinals on Monday night and fell 66-55 to the Seahawks.
"This was a tough one. It wasn't a perfect game, but I did feel like our girls, we fought to the end, to the very last second," said Coach
Rene Haynes. "I'm proud. I think we were strong in conference play and didn't want to end our season, but I'm proud of our girls."
"We didn't go out soft. I feel like it was a good game. We gave people the a game they want to see," said
Brandy Thomas. "Oh, they're huge contributors. They don't even play like they're rookies," she said when asked about the first years that were honored by the NEC this season.
SHARK BITES
- The Seahawks started the game by going on an 8-2 run, but LIU ended the first quarter up 20-14 after going on a 14-0 run.
- With two minutes left in the second period though, Wagner took hold of the lead and held it for the remainder of the game, ending the half up 30-26, and took the game 66-55.
- The Sharks out-rebounded the Seahawks 42-37, but struggled with keeping the ball and giving up 24 turnovers.
- Senior guard Brandy Thomas has 18 points and 10 rebounds.
- Freshman guard Emaia O'Brien had 12 points.
