BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Giovanni Ciaccio was the hero for LIU baseball on Wednesday night as they downed Stony Brook, 3-2, on a walk-off solo homerun in the bottom of the ninth. With the victory, the Sharks improve to 12-8 on the season while riding a four-game winning streak.
SHARK BITES
- The Seawolves struck first on a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Evan Fox, to take an early 1-0 lead. Garrett Yawn responded in the second and third on the mound with one-two-three innings to keep the lead at one run.
- In the bottom of the third, Seth Surrett and Colin Adams walked to put two on base. Jack Power laid down a bunt to the third baseman, advancing both runners into scoring position. Ciaccio would draw a walk to load the bases, making way for Michael Edelman to reach on a fielder's choice to score Surrett, tying the game at one apiece.
- Duruing EJ Exposito's plate appearance in the third, Edelman swiped second with Adams at third to force a throw down to second and let Adams score easily. The Sharks led, 2-1, after three.
- Stony Brook led off the fifth with a solo bomb from Giordano to knot the game up at 2-2. The Sharks would get a baserunner in the fifth, but the game would still be tied heading to the sixth.
- Shane Tucker came in relief of Yawn, who finished the day with five innigns of work, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Tucker gave up a single but proceeded to strike out all three batters to end the inning.
- Josh Gainer entered in the seventh and collected three outs on eight pitches to move to the seventh inning stretch with the game still locked at 2-2.
- In the top of the ninth, Nick Torres came out of the bullpen in place of Gainer. After loading the bases, Torres was able to escape the jam by forcing a flyout to right, sending the game to the bottom of the ninth.
- Adams began the inning by grounding out to second base. Christopher Hund pinch hit for Power, flying out to center. With two outs, Ciaccio looked at two balls before connecting on a walk-off solo homerun to right field as the Sharks walked off on the Seawolves, 3-2.
- Nick Torres was given the win, and David Sharkey took the loss for Stony Brook.
