MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The LIU softball team spent their second-to-last-day in Florida gathering two more wins taking their game versus Siena College 5-2 and their matchup with Niagara University 12-6.
SHARK BITES – LIU 5, SIENA 2
- It was Siena who got on the board first, taking their two runs early, in the bottom of the second, before LIU responded by scoring three in the top of the third and then two more in the top of the seventh to take the 5-2 victory.
- The Saint's two runs came from three hits.
- In the third, Katie Hinkle tripled to left field, but wasn't on base long, as a single from Camryn Lyman allowed her to cross home plate and bring in a run. Lyman was then able to advance to second and third after Ryleigh Bermea grounded out and Ciara Granado singled. Lyman and Granado score thanks to a double from Gabby Padilla to take the 3-2 lead.
- It wasn't until the top of the seventh that the Sharks would strike again. Bermea was the first Shark on base after being hit by a pitch, and Priscilla Gillies was brought in as a pinch runner. Emily Money would then single and push Gillies to second. Padilla was then walked and suddenly two Sharks were in scoring position. When Kiana Cisneros flied out to left field, Padilla arrived safely at second, Money at third, and Gillies crossed home plate to bring in another run.
- The final run of the game was when Money scored thanks to a single from Kristen Blanchard.
- Desiree Smith earned the win on the mound for the Sharks.
SHARK BITES – LIU 12, NIAGARA 6
- Niagara got the scoring started out of the gate, putting two up on the board in the top of the first frame before LIU responded and topped the Purple Eagles with five runs to lead 5-2 into the second. NU then scored another two in the top of the second, The Sharks again responding and taking another run across the plate to lead 6-4.
- LIU would hold Niagara scoreless through the next three frames but would take four more runs for themselves in the bottom of the fourth to be up 10-4 heading into the sixth inning. Each team would score two across the plate in the sixth inning to finish out the scoring for the day and bring the final tally to 12-6 in favor of the Sharks.
- In the first, Niagara would score their two runs off of three hits.
- Camryn Lyman would get on the board first, scoring on a passed ball after getting on base with a single and making it to third on an Angelina Reno double. After Gabby Padilla was walked, Victoria Zatko would single and score Reno and allow Padilla to head to third.
- Kiana Cisneros then got a hit, singling to score Padilla and push Zatko to second. A Maya Avila single earned her two RBIs when both Cisneros and Zatko scored to put the Sharks up 5-2.
- In the second, the Purple Eagles got themselves two more runs off of four hits.
- Lyman scored in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI from Zatko, after getting on base with a single and making it to second when Reno was walked before taking third on a wild pitch.
- Four more runs off of three hits would come in for LIU in the bottom of the fourth. Lyman would be scored by a sacrifice fly ball from Padilla before Reno would score, reaching home after an error by second base. Cisneros' single would then score Ciara Granado. Emily Money was brought out to pinch run for Zatko after she got on base and would score from second on a wild pitch.
- Niagara's final two runs of the game came in the top of the sixth off of four hits.
- The bottom of the sixth started with a Cisneros walk, and she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt courtesy of Kristen Blanchard. She then advanced to third after Avila was walked. Lyman would get two RBI in the inning, bringing in both Avila and Cisneros, upping the score to 12-6.
- On the mound, Elena Valenzuela nabbed the win.
In their final day of Spring Games play, the Sharks are taking on Lafayette College and Bucknell University on Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
