FAIRFIELD, CONN. – The LIU women's basketball team won a thriller at Sacred Heart on Thursday night, 50-46, their fourth win in the last five games. Senior
Brandy Thomas led the Sharks with 18 points, including going 12-for-14 at the free throw line.
SHARK BITES
- LIU led 11-7 after the first period, holding the Pioneers to 3-10 shooting in the frame.
- Sacred Heart opened on a 5-0 run to start the second, but the Sharks responded, putting together a 9-0 run towards the end of the quarter.
- As a team, LIU shot 7-8 from the line in the first 20 minutes.
- The Sharks went into the halftime locker room with a 25-18 advantage. Junior Kennedy Taylor led all scorers with seven points.
- A layup by senior Aislinn Flynn at the 6:38 mark in the third gave the Sharks a 13-point advantage, their largest lead of the game.
- The Pioneers willed their way back into the contest, shrinking LIU's lead down to six at the start of the fourth quarter. And in the fourth, a layup at 7:14 brought the home team within one.
- To answer, freshman Emaia O'Brien knocked down a three-pointer to push the lead back up to four.
- Thomas was able to score the last eight points of the evening for LIU from there. Her pair of free throws with a second remaining put the finishing touches on the victory.
- Up next, the Sharks will host Wagner on Saturday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m. for Girls and Women in Sports Day.
