THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. – The LIU women's water polo team traveled to California and defeated both California Baptist, 14-13, and Cal State Monterey Bay, 13-7, in the first day of the Tina Finali Invitational. The Sharks were led by
Paola Dominguez, who poured in a combined 13 goals between both contests.
SHARK BITES – LIU vs. California Baptist
- Paola Dominguez scored the first two goals of the game in a two-minute stretch, giving the Sharks an early 2-0 advantage. Dominguez would later add her third goal of the period before Taylor Thurlow found the back of the cage for her first. It was 4-3, LIU, heading to the second.
- Dominguez continued to dominate, firing in two more goals to bring her total to five and giving LIU a 6-3 lead.
- Diba Peiravani added to the lead with her first goal before Dominguez scored another with 30 second left until halftime. LIU led 8-4 at the break.
- In the third, there was a combined 11 goals from both teams, the highest scoring quarter in the game. Dominguez was able to score two of the Sharks five in the period. Thurlow, Kate Hinrichs, and Elena Camerana scored the other three.
- It was 13-11 at the beginning of the fourth, and Hinrichs would add the final LIU goal at 6:33 remaining. The Sharks held on to defeat the Lancers, 14-13.
- Julia Zebak earned the win, finishing with three saves.
SHARK BITES – LIU vs. Cal State Monterey Bay
- The second game began in the same way with Dominguez scoring the first pair of goals for LIU. The lead grew to 6-0 in the first, with Camerana, Peiravani, and Hinrichs each adding goals of their own.
- After the Otters answered with two goals, the Sharks went on a five-to-one run heading to the fourth and leading 10-4. Alejandra Aranguren scored the final two goals of the third for LIU.
- Peiravani and Dominguez each added goals in the fourth to solidify a 13-7 victory.
- Dominguez finished the contest with five goals to lead the team. Peiravani and Aranguren had three and two goals, respectively. Zebak earned another win on the day, collecting nine saves.
