SHARKS WIN! Sharks win Final Two of Tina Finali Invitational

Thousand Oaks, CA – The #22 LIU women's water polo team took down Austin College 19-4 and #23 CSUN, 11-4, to complete a perfect 4-0 run at the Tina Finali Invitational. With their win against #23 CSUN, the Sharks have now defeated four opponents this season either ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes.
 
Shark Bites vs Austin College:
  • LIU caught fire fast, scoring the first three goals of the game in less than two minutes with a pair of goals from Elena Camarena and one more from Paola Dominguez
  • Austin College nabbed a goal midway through the first quarter, but the Sharks fired three more goals into the back of the Kangaroo's net to enter the second quarter ahead 6-1.
  • The Sharks again blitzed Austin defense from the opening whistle with two goals in the opening two minutes, both Courtesy of Dominguez for her third and fourth of the morning.
  • Four more Shark goals courtesy of Camarena, Dominguez, Alejandra Aranguren, and Kate Fischer with five seconds to end the first half ahead 12-1. This was the second consecutive game LIU kept an opponent of the scoreboard in a quarter
  • Less than a minute into the second half, Aranguren found the back of the net for the Sharks to put the Sharks ahead 13-1.
  • LIU had four different scorers in the third quarter with Kate Hinrichs, Rachel Loomis, Jayda Myers, and Amelia Sanchez each contributing to the stat sheet.
  • Two more goals in the final quarter from Sanchez and Xonhane Medina clinched the Sharks 19-4 victory, their largest win of the season.
  • Goalie Julia Zebak made five saves in the contest for the Sharks.
Shark Bites vs #23CSUN:
  • The Sharks were fast off the opening whistle with Jessica Dean burying the ball in the back of the CSUN net in just under 45 seconds of action to put the Sharks ahead 1-0.
  • Down 3-1, Dominguez and Taylor Thurlow scored less than ten seconds apart from one another at the start of the second quarter to tie the game 3-3.  
  • CSUN and LIU would trade goals for the rest of the quarter to end the first half tied 6-6.
  • After a defensive back and forth to open the second half, Dominguez, Camarena and Hinrichs each found the back of the net to push the Sharks ahead 10-7.
  • CSUN scored twice to cut the LIU led to 10-9 early in the fourth quarter, but goals from Dominguez, Hinrichs, Dean, and Camarena helped LIU secure the 14-11 victory.
  • Dominguez finished the tournament with 23 goals with and at least five goals in each game to increase her team leading goal total to 49.
The Sharks will be back in action on Sunday, March 6th when they travel to the Harvard Invitational with their first match against California State East Bay at 9:15AM.
