EMMITSBURG, Md. – The LIU men's basketball team notched a huge win on the road Saturday afternoon, beating Mount St. Mary's, 66-61. With the win, the Sharks clinch the #3 seed in the NEC tournament, and the right to host, starting with the first round, Wednesday, March 2.
SHARK BITES
- LIU is now 13-13 overall, and 10-6 in the NEC with one weekend left in the regular season.
- The Sharks were led by double digit performances from five players: Ty Flowers (13 pts), Eral Penn (13 pts), Tre Wood (12 pts), Kyndall Davis (12 pts), and Alex Rivera (10 pts).
- LIU led for over 80 percent of the game Saturday, including jumping out to an early 4-0 advantage.
- A jumper from Wood at 12:01 would widen LIU's lead to 17-8. Wood would widen that lead to 21-10 just three minutes later. Mount would close the gap to just two points, but LIU led, 33-26 at the halftime break.
- Mount took the lead for the first time in the second half at the 16:07 mark, and held on to that lead until 13:31, when Davis would tie the game up, 40-40. A jumper from Wood put LIU back up. 42-40 at 11:02, and the Sharks would not trail again.
- Alex Rivera drained a three at 7:19 that put LIU up, 54-42, one of their widest leads of the game. The Sharks led by 12 again with 3:52 to play, when Flowers made a free throw to put LIU up, 60-48.
- Rivera, Davis and Wood went a perfect 6-for-6 combined from the free throw line in the final 39 seconds to ice the win for LIU, 66-61.
- Wood finished shooting 4-for-9 in the game, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He also had a team-high five assists and five steals, along with three rebounds.
- Flowers had 13 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Penn had 13 points, eight rebounds and two assists.
- Davis finished with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Rivera added 10 points and four rebounds.
- LIU shot 47.2 percent from the field in the win, and a scorching 85.7 percent from the free throw line.
