FORT MYERS, Fla. – The LIU softball team dropped two tough games at the FGCU Kickoff Classic Friday afternoon, falling to Kent State in extra innings, 5-4, and dropping a 9-1 run rule decision to Boston College.
GAME ONE – Kent State 5, LIU 4 (8 inn.)
- The Sharks jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the day, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Kiana Cisneros had an RBI single and Samantha Garcia had a sac fly to score one more, and LIU led, 2-0.
- The Eagles tied it up with a run scored in third and one more in the fifth. Kent State took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, with a two-RBI homer that gave the Eagles a 4-2 lead.
- The Sharks tied it up with a two-out rally in the sixth. Alyssa Okada walked, and an error put Katie Hinkle on. Maya Avila singled up the middle, and Okada would score on the play to make it 4-3. Camryn Lyman was walked to load the bases, and speedy senior Katie Hinkle would score from third on a wild pitch to knot it up, 4-4.
- Sophomore starting pitcher Alyssa O'Donnell would retire all three batters in the bottom of the sixth, and the Sharks had two runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but couldn't convert. O'Donnell got KSU in four batters in the bottom of the frame, sending the game to extra innings.
- The Sharks didn't score in the top of the eighth, but Kent State would. An RBI single would give the Eagles the walk-off 5-4 win.
- O'Donnell (0-1) got the loss on the mound in her first start of the season, pitching the complete 7.1 innings, while giving up four earned runs and striking out three.
GAME TWO – BC 9, LIU 1 (5 inn.)
- The Eagles would take a quick lead on the Sharks in the second game of the day. Boston College would score five runs in the first, on a long RBI single and a two RBI home run, for the 5-0 lead.
- LIU got on the board in the bottom of the inning, with an Avila walk, and back-to-back singles from Lyman and Cisneros. Cisneros's single scored Availa to put the score at 5-1 after one.
- BC added three more runs in the top of the second on four hits, and added the ninth run in the top of the third.
- The Eagles' starting pitcher limited LIU's offense, holding the Sharks to just four hits with eight strikeouts, helping lead her team to the run-rule win in five, 9-1.
Up next, the Sharks wrap up the final day at FGCU, taking on Kent State at 10 a.m., and Clemson at 12:15 p.m.
