EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LIU men's ice hockey team aimed on Saturday night to build on last weekend's signature win against No. 12 Ohio State, the program's first-ever victory against a ranked opponent. However, a third-period charge came up short and Brown won the opener of a two-game series, 5-1, at Northwell Health Ice Center.
Adam Goodsir's power-play goal early in the third period got LIU on the scoreboard.
But a pair of power-play goals by Brown late in the second period after being awarded a 5-on-3 advantage had created too big of a hole for the Sharks.
Vinnie Purpura handled the first two periods in goal for LIU, while
Brandon Perrone handled the third period and kept the Bears at bay until an empty-net goal in the final minute.
The teams meet again on Sunday at 7:15 p.m. at Northwell Health Ice Center.
