STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Imeer Johnson's interception return early in the third quarter put the LIU football team in the red zone and in position for a potential game-tying touchdown.
However, the Sharks ultimately were forced to settle for a field goal on that opportunity and eventually fell to host Wagner, 37-26, on Friday night at Hameline Field.
Five turnovers, 110 yards in penalties and a pair of missed field goals hurt the Sharks (0-7, 0-3 NEC).
LIU again was threatening early in the fourth quarter, but quarterback
Derek Green was hit hard as he released the ball and Junior Wily intercepted it and returned it for a touchdown that gave the Seahawks an 18-point lead with 10:08 remaining in the game.
It was the second interception return for a touchdown during the game for Wagner.
Backup quarterback
Luca Stanzani completed his first career touchdown pass, to
Owen Glascoe, with 6:27 remaining.
Glascoe finished with 10 catches for 130 yards.
Johnson's interception was the first of his career.
The Sharks return to action next Saturday at Duquesne.
