Box Score NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. — The LIU football team suffered a heartbreaker in the Northeast Conference opener on Saturday.
Merrimack scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally for a 24-23 win against the Sharks on homecoming at Duane Stadium.
The Warriors took the one-point lead with 3:29 remaining.
LIU then drove into potential field-goal range, but the Sharks lost a fumble with 1:35 remaining. The play was reviewed to see if quarterback
Derek Green's arm was moving forward and the play instead was an incomplete pass, but replay officials confirmed the play would remain a fumble.
LIU running back
Pat Bowen had produced a tiebreaking 86-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter and the Sharks ultimately built a 23-10 lead on the third of
Michael Coney's field goals.
Coney, the reigning FCS Special Teams Player of the Week, went 3-for-3 on field goals and has now connected on nine straight field goals.
LIU (0-5, 0-1 NEC) now enters a bye week. The Sharks next play Oct. 15 when they host their own homecoming against Sacred Heart at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
