ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The LIU women's water polo team had one of the biggest wins in program history Saturday night, beating #10 Indiana, 14-9 on the first day of the Michigan Invitational. The Sharks also beat Salem, 16-6 in the first game of the day, starting the 2022 season with a 2-0 record.
SHARK BITES – LIU vs. #10 Indiana
- The Hoosiers opened the game scoring three straight goals, but the Sharks cut the deficit to 3-2 by the end of the period, with goals in the final minute by Jeannet Garcia and Elena Camarena.
- LIU caught on fire in the second period. After Indiana took a 4-2 lead, the Sharks scored three straight, from Camarena, Paola Dominguez and Jenna Anderson to go up on the #10-ranked team, 5-4. Indiana scored with 49 seconds left to tie it up, 5-5, but the Sharks added two more goals from Dominguez and Camarena in the final 30 seconds to take the 7-5 lead into half time.
- From there, the Sharks stayed in the lead. Every time the Hoosiers scored, the Sharks answered with a goal, including scores from Alejandra Aranguren, Jessica Dean and Kate Hinrichs. Indiana would close the gap to 10-9 in the fourth, but LIU finished the match scoring four straight goals in the final six minutes to clinch the huge top 10 win, 14-9.
- Goalie Julia Zebak made nine saves in net for the Sharks in the win.
SHARK BITES – LIU vs. Salem
- The Sharks opened the day with a win over DII Salem, 16-6.
- The Tigers scored first in the game, but LIU answered a minute later to tie it up with a goal from Hinrichs, 1-1. Another minute later, Dean added a goal to put LIU up, 2-1, and the Sharks would not trail for the rest of the game.
- Dominguez led LIU's effort in the win with six goals in the game, while Hinrichs scored three, and Dean had two. Kate Fischer also had a goal for LIU in the victory.
- Zebak made seven saves in net for the Sharks, while Rebecca Ansell made one in three minutes of action.
Up next, the Sharks take part in day two of the Michigan Invitational, taking on two more top teams in the nation. LIU will face off against #2 Stanford at 8 a.m., and #3 UCLA at 12:30 p.m. Live stats are available on liuathletics.com, and the Sharks will stream the game on Facebook Live for fans.
