BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - LIU women's ice hockey defender and alternate captain
Paula Bergström was selected to the Sweden Women's Ice Hockey Olympic roster ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, it was
announced last week.
Bergström, who completed her sophomore season at LIU in 2020-21, is set to make her Olympic debut, and is the first ever player from LIU women's ice hockey to be selected to an Olympic roster.
The Swedes are in Group B, where they will face Japan on February 3
rd at 3:40 A.M., the Czech Republic on February 5
th at 3:40 A.M., and then hosts China on February 7
th at 8:10 A.M. (All dates and times shown in Eastern time.) The top two teams from Group B will advance to the semi-finals on February 14
th, with the gold medal match set for February 17
th.
During her two seasons with the Sharks so far, Bergström has racked up 17 points and netted two game-winning-goals, while helping lead LIU to a NEWHA championship in 2019-20, and the Commissioner's Cup crown in 2020-21.
Team Sweden has only medaled once at the Winter Olympics in women's ice hockey, at the 2002 games in Salt Lake City, where they defeated rivals Finland 2-1 in the bronze medal game.
Bergström, who centralized this year to try out for the Olympic team, currently plays with MoDo Hockey in the SDHL, the top division of women's ice hockey in Sweden.
