BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - LIU women's ice hockey defender and alternate captain Paula Bergström was selected to the Sweden Women's Ice Hockey Olympic roster ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, it was announced last week.

Bergström, who completed her sophomore season at LIU in 2020-21, is set to make her Olympic debut, and is the first ever player from LIU women's ice hockey to be selected to an Olympic roster.

The Swedes are in Group B, where they will face Japan on February 3rd at 3:40 A.M., the Czech Republic on February 5th at 3:40 A.M., and then hosts China on February 7th at 8:10 A.M. (All dates and times shown in Eastern time.) The top two teams from Group B will advance to the semi-finals on February 14th, with the gold medal match set for February 17th.

During her two seasons with the Sharks so far, Bergström has racked up 17 points and netted two game-winning-goals, while helping lead LIU to a NEWHA championship in 2019-20, and the Commissioner's Cup crown in 2020-21.

Team Sweden has only medaled once at the Winter Olympics in women's ice hockey, at the 2002 games in Salt Lake City, where they defeated rivals Finland 2-1 in the bronze medal game.

Bergström, who centralized this year to try out for the Olympic team, currently plays with MoDo Hockey in the SDHL, the top division of women's ice hockey in Sweden.
