BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU men's basketball team hosted league-leading Wagner at the Steinberg Wellness Center Friday night in high-intensity, end-to-end game that saw the Seahawks make a last-second bucket to send it to OT. There, Wagner prevailed to take the 92-85 win. Redshirt senior
Eral Penn led the Sharks with 28 points and 14 rebounds.
SHARK BITES
- Right from the jump ball that LIU won to start the game, the Sharks and the Seahawks were back and forth on the court in a breakneck game.
- LIU went on a 10-0 run midway through the first half led by Penn, with two made free throws and two back-to-back threes. A driving layup from sophomore Kyndall Davis forced a Seahawks timeout, and the Sharks were up 25-18.
- The Sharks were unable to maintain their lead and went into halftime tied at 38 all.
- Redshirt junior Alex Rivera made three three-pointers in a row that single-handedly sent the Sharks on a 9-2 run midway through the second half to put LIU back up, 52-47 with over 13 minutes left to play.
- The Seahawks scored with 46 seconds left to cut LIU's lead to one point, 70-69. Then, with only 20 seconds left in regulation, Penn was fouled and went to the line to shoot two, making both, and giving the Sharks a 72-69 lead.
- The final 10 seconds of the game went back and forth. The Seahawks made a three with 9.7 seconds left to play to tie the score up at 72 all, but then Ty Flowers made a clutch trey with just three seconds on the clock to lift the Sharks up ahead of the Seahawks. Wagner would make a pull-up three at the buzzer to tie the game, 75-75, and send it to overtime.
- LIU was in foul trouble all night, and found themselves with three players fouling out in the extra period. The Seahawks were able to capitalize on that and pull off the 92-85 win.
- Up next, the Sharks take on the FDU Knights on the road, Sunday, January 23 at 7 p.m.
