BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU men's soccer team battled back at home Saturday afternoon, scoring three goals in the final 30 minutes of the game to defeat UMBC, 3-1. Both teams move to 2-2-1 with the result.
The Sharks did not get off to a strong start, as a defensive miscue just over four minutes in resulted in a Retriever goal, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. UMBC would hold on to that lead throughout the first half and well into the second half, despite LIU holding an 18-8 advantage in shots, and a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Sharks got the scoring started on the other end of the field in the 61st minute. The first goal of the day came off one of those 18 corner kicks, taken by
Robert Winkler. Freshman
Jeremy Guardado's head found the cross, and he placed it perfectly for
Emil Jaaskelainen, who netted it in the corner just past UMBC's keeper, tying the game up, 1-1.
19 minutes later, Jaaskelainen had another shot, but this one was blocked by a UMBC defender.
Andre Puente was there to collect the rebound, and the sophomore passed from the top of the box to
Assane Ben Fall on the left side, who arced the ball in just over the goalie's head, giving the Sharks a 2-1 advantage in the 80th minute.
And just two minutes later, it was Puente's turn.
Javier Rehberger took a free kick and placed it into the box, where Puente's head was waiting to knock it past the UMBC goalie and ice the Sharks' 3-1 win.
