BROOVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU softball team wrapped up the regular season at home Sunday afternoon, dropping two to league-leader Saint Francis U. The Red Flash won the first game, 11-0 in five innings, clinching the top seed in the Northeast Conference. And in game two, LIU got runs on the board, but fell in seven innings, 7-5.
Prior to Sunday's first game, the Sharks honored their seven graduating seniors:
Ryleigh Bermea,
Patricia Griffin,
Tallie Woodson,
Alina Castillo,
Haley Irvis,
Victoria Lowe and
Katie Hinkle.
In the first game of the day, SFU handed the Sharks their first run-rule loss of the season, beating LIU 11-0 in five innings.
In the second game, LIU's underclassmen got a chance at the Red Flash, and did well, particularly at the plate, scoring five runs against SFU. After Saint Francis went up 1-0 in the first, the Sharks answered in the bottom of the frame. Freshman
Dallas Andrews led off with a bunt single, and came home two batters later, when sophomore
Maya Avila hit a home run over the right field fence to make it 2-1 LIU.
SFU would add six runs in the second, but LIU would stay in it, using a sac fly from
Angelina Reno to bring in a run, cutting the lead to 6-3.
The Sharks would add two more runs in the fifth. Reno would lead off being hit by a pitch, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She made it to third on a ground out, and would score when freshman
Gabby Padilla hit a triple off the left center field fence.
Samantha Garcia would add another run when she pinch hit and singled, scoring Padilla and cutting the lead to 7-5.
But the Sharks wouldn't score again, and SFU took the series sweep. With the two losses, LIU finishes the season 25-7. The NEC Tournament will take place May 12-15 in Loretto, Pa.
