BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU softball team had two big wins at home Friday afternoon, taking two wins from league-leading Central Connecticut State. The Blue Devils came into Friday's matchup undefeated in league action at 16-0, before the Sharks handed them two losses, 7-2 and 9-2 at the LIU Softball Complex.
GAME ONE
- CCSU opened the game with a one-out home run in the top of the first, before the Sharks would even the score in the third. Senior Katie Hinkle had a leadoff walk, and two batters later, Ciara Granado would send a sacrifice fly to left field that would bring her home and tie it up, 1-1.
- The Blue Devils added a run in the fourth to retake the lead, but LIU would take the lead for good in the bottom of the frame.
- Hinkle would single to bring in the tying run, and then senior Patricia Griffin had an RBI single to make it 3-2.
- LIU tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Alina Castillo and Kiana Cisneros would hit back-to-back singles to get on base. Samantha Garcia would hit a single up the middle that scored Castillo, and then an error by CCSU would let Cisneros come home, and LIU led, 5-2.
- Cisneros would add two more in the sixth. Griffin and Lyman led off with singles, and were advanced by a sac bunt from Granado. Cisneros would single to left field, bringing home both runners, and the Sharks led, 7-2.
- Senior Tallie Woodson stayed lights out on the mound, earning her 10th win of the season. She pitched the complete-game win, striking out seven.
GAME TWO
- In game two, the Sharks leapt out to a 2-0 lead. Griffin would lead off with a single, and scored on Granado's double to right center field. Cisneros then added a double of her own to bring in a run, and LIU led 2-0 after one.
- LIU added three more runs in the second. Lyman would bring home a run on a sac fly, and then Granado homered over the center field fence, giving the Sharks a 5-0 advantage.
- CCSU would get on the board in the fourth, but the Sharks added two more runs in the bottom of the inning, and the scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth, to go up 9-2.
- Senior Haley Irvis moved to 5-0 with the win on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings and striking out a season-high eight batters. Victoria Lowe pitched 2.1 near perfect innings of relief to clinch the win for LIU.
With the sweep, LIU moves to 21-3 on the season, and will take on CCSU in another double header, Saturday, April 24 at 12 p.m.
