Baseball Batttles Blue Devils in Series Opener

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU baseball team fell to CCSU rival 4-2 at LIU Baseball Complex Friday afternoon, the first of a three-game series between the two teams. The Sharks move to 8-5 with the loss.

Early on, pitching and defense were strong for both teams, and two innings passed before anyone got on the board. The Blue Devils would get the first runs of the game up in the top of the third inning, when a two-run home run gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

It was another three innings before either team would score. This time, LIU got on the board. Colin Adams led off with a single, and was advanced on back-to-back groundouts. He came home on an RBI single from senior Anthony Warneke, making it 2-1.

An RBI walk in the seventh made it 3-1, but LIU would close the gap again in the bottom of the frame. Warneke had another RBI single through the right side to score Adams, and the Sharks trailed, 3-2.

A two-out double and single in the top of the eighth would give the Blue Devils an insurance run, 4-2. The Sharks would get runners in scoring position in both the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings, but stranded both runners, and fell to CCSU, 4-2.

Senior Jackson Svete had the loss in the start, despite seven strikeouts. Senior Patrick Clyne pitched 2.1 innings in relief, holding the Blue Devils to just two hits.

The two teams resume the series Saturday, April 17 at 3 p.m.
