BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU volleyball team beat Merrimack twice at home Friday night, 3-0 and 3-0. The Sharks won game one, 25-9, 25-10, 25-14, and game two, 25-9, 25-13, 25-15. With the wins, LIU moved to 7-3 in Northeast Conference action, and in second place in the standings with one series left to play.
SHARK BITES
- LIU hit .415 in the first match of the day, including .448 in the first set. The Sharks used an 8-0 run in the first set to go up, 13-2 on the Warriors, and used another 8-0 run to get started in the second set.
- Sophomore Karolina Nova had 12 kills in match one, hitting a blistering .524, along with eight digs and three service aces.
- Senior Jovana Stekovic also had 12 kills, hitting .500, and eight digs.
- Miranda Strongman had seven kills and two blocks for the Sharks, while senior Kristina Mamic had four blocks at the net.
- Junior Anastasia Scott had 13 digs and six assists, while freshman setters Ainsley Malis and Allie Merz split time at setter. Malis finished with 23 assists and 12 digs, while Merz had 13 assists, eight digs and a service ace.
- In game two, Nova notched a double double, with 17 kills and 14 digs.
- Sophomore Miranda Strongman was on fire in game two, with 12 kills on just 16 attempts, for a .688 attack percentage.
- Stekovic added eight digs, four kills and four service aces.
- Merz and Malis split sets once again, and both finished with double doubles. Merz had 15 assists and 10 digs, while Malis had 12 assists and 12 digs.
- Up next, the Sharks head north to take on Bryant in a battle for the second playoff spot. Those two teams will face off in a two game series, Wednesday, March 31.
