FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The LIU women's hockey team took game one of the Commissioner's Cup series on the road Tuesday, and they did it in dramatic fashion. The Sharks beat Sacred Heart 3-2, scoring in sudden death overtime. Sophomore
Julia Hoffmann scored the game winner for LIU.
The two teams, who have faced off five times this season, were scoreless through the first period. Early in the second period, the Pioneers got on the board first. LIU would answer nine minutes later, when junior
Megan Roe scored her first goal as a Shark on a power play. She was assisted by
Alex Thomas and
Abby Latorella, tying it up, 1-1-.
The home team would retake the lead ten minutes later, scoring a power play goal of their own to go up, 2-1.
But sophomore
Carrigan Umpherville would even it up midway through the third period, scoring with help from
Stella Scott and
Matilda af Bjur to tie it up, 2-2-.
The two teams went to overtime, which according to NEWHA postseason rules is 20 minute, 5x5, sudden death periods. For the Sharks, it didn't take long to capitalize. Just three minutes into the period, Hoffmann would score her second goal of the year and the game-winner, with help from
Alex Thomas and
Sarah Rourke. The goal would end the game, and give LIU the first game win, 3-2.
Sophomore
Kenzie Harmison had 24 saves in net, including two in overtime to help LIU to the win.
Up next, the two teams compete in game two of the best-of-three series, Thursday, March 4 at Ice Works in Syosset, N.Y. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
