Ciaccio's Homer Caps Baseball's Come-From-Behind Win at FDU

TEANECK, N.J. – A three-run seventh inning capped off a come-from-behind victory for the Long Island University baseball team as the Sharks took down Fairleigh Dickinson University, 6-5 on Wednesday, March 17.

LIU compiled five hits on the day, led by a 2-for-4 effort by Giovanni Ciaccio. The junior blasted a two-run home run down the right field line during the decisive seventh inning and added a double, two runs scored, and one stolen base. Carlton Harper added one double and Seth Surrett drove in two runs on the afternoon.

On the mound, Shane Tucker earned the win in his second collegiate appearance, tossing a perfect inning in relief while striking out two. Josh Gainer earned the save, striking out two during the bottom of the ninth and retiring the Knights in order.

The Blue and Gold jumped ahead early as Anthony Warneke drove in Ciaccio with an infield single and later scored on an RBI-groundout by Andy Camilo to give LIU a 2-0 lead after the first half inning. The Sharks tacked on another run during the top of the second before FDU tallied five runs during their next two at-bats to jump ahead 5-3.

Surrett singled through the right side of the infield after Harper doubled to right-center field to bring the Sharks within one run and Ciaccio gave LIU the lead with a two-out homer on a 1-1 pitch. The LIU pitching staff shut down the Knight bats the rest of the way, retiring the final nine batters in order to earn the win.

LIU will open Northeast Conference play on Saturday, March 20 when it travels to Mount St. Mary's University for a three-game series.
