BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Goalie
Will Mark continued to rewrite the Long Island University men's lacrosse record books, leading the Sharks to a 14-12 victory over Hobart College on Saturday, March 13 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Mark, who broke his own school record for single-game saves earlier this year at Sacred Heart, made history again on Saturday with 24 saves against the Statesmen. The 24 saves also stand as the highest single-game total in Division I this season, three more than the previous high held by Mark and two others.
Richie LaCalandra was outstanding offensively once again, tallying six points with four goals and two assists.
Sean Boll and
Will Snelders also paced the offensive attack, scoring four and three goals, respectively.
It was the Statesmen setting the tone early, winning the opening two faceoffs and scoring twice during the first 37 seconds. The Sharks responded in a big way, however, scoring the next five goals to take control. Mark made 11 saves during the opening period to keep Hobart at bay and LIU held a 6-4 lead at the first break in the action. Hobart chipped away during the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to level the scoring before Boll tallied a man-up goal to give the Blue and Gold a one-goal lead at halftime.
LIU continued to roll during the third quarter, holding Hobart scoreless while tacking on three goals to move ahead 11-7 with 15 minutes to play. LaCalandra scored twice during the fourth quarter to give the Sharks their largest lead of the day at 14-9 with 8:25 remaining. Hobart scored the final three goals of the contest, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit and LIU moved to 2-0 in Northeast Conference play to begin the season.
The Sharks will look to move their win streak to four games on Saturday, March 20 for their third and final meeting with Sacred Heart. LIU will play host to the Pioneers beginning at 12:00 p.m.
