WEST POINT, N.Y. – The LIU men's hockey team increased the offensive output at Tate Rink Saturday, but couldn't quite get past the Black Knights of Army, falling 6-3.
LIU scored first, with 7:40 left in the first period. Senior
Mitchell Meek had his first goal of the season, scoring with the help of
Nolan Welsh and
Arseni Smekhnov.
Army scored quickly in the second period on a power play to even it up, and two minutes later, scored an even strength goal to take a 2-1 lead. Another power play goal three minutes later and a goal six minutes later gave the Black Knights a 4-1 advantage.
Senior
Zack Bross would help LIU make up some ground, scoring the second Sharks goal with 13:34 to play. Assists were credited to
Jordan Di Cicco and
Max Balinson, and LIU trailed, 4-2. But just over a minute later, Army added another goal, and it was 5-2 for the home team after two.
Freshman
Nolan Welsh would give LIU a boost when he scored with 9:24 to play, assisted by Bross and Meek, cutting the lead to 5-3. But Army would add a final late goal on the empty net, and took the win, 6-3.
With the loss, LIU moves to 3-10-0 in its inaugural season.
