Men’s Hockey Scores Three, Caps Season vs Knights

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The LIU men's hockey team increased the offensive output at Tate Rink Saturday, but couldn't quite get past the Black Knights of Army, falling 6-3.

LIU scored first, with 7:40 left in the first period. Senior Mitchell Meek had his first goal of the season, scoring with the help of Nolan Welsh and Arseni Smekhnov.

Army scored quickly in the second period on a power play to even it up, and two minutes later, scored an even strength goal to take a 2-1 lead. Another power play goal three minutes later and a goal six minutes later gave the Black Knights a 4-1 advantage.

Senior Zack Bross would help LIU make up some ground, scoring the second Sharks goal with 13:34 to play. Assists were credited to Jordan Di Cicco and Max Balinson, and LIU trailed, 4-2. But just over a minute later, Army added another goal, and it was 5-2 for the home team after two.

Freshman Nolan Welsh would give LIU a boost when he scored with 9:24 to play, assisted by Bross and Meek, cutting the lead to 5-3. But Army would add a final late goal on the empty net, and took the win, 6-3.

With the loss, LIU moves to 3-10-0 in its inaugural season.
