EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The LIU women's ice hockey team had a dramatic come-from-behind win over the RIT Tigers on New Year's Eve at the Northwell Health Ice Center, scoring two goals in the final minute of action to take the win, 4-3. Sophomore
Sarah Rourke scored two of LIU's four goals, including the game-winner with 10 seconds left. With the win, the Sharks improve to 11-7 on the season.
SHARK BITES
- Rourke opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal late in the first period during an RIT power play, to take the Sharks up 1-0.
- Forty-five seconds later, RIT retaliated while still on the power play, to make it even at 1-1.
- The Tigers then tallied two more in the second period to go ahead 3-1.
- Midway through the third period, the Sharks pulled within one when Carrigan Umpherville scored with assists by Jeannie Wallner and Alva Johnsson.
- Down 3-2 with two minutes left in the final period, LIU pulled Tindra Holm from goal. The extra attacker made the difference; with only twenty seconds remaining in the game, Abby Latorella pushed it to an even 3-3 on assists from both Johnsson and Stella Scott.
- Just ten seconds later, Rourke struck, assisted by Umpherville, helping LIU avoid overtime, and clinching an exciting 4-3 win over the Tigers.
- Holm tallied 21 saves for the game, including holding RIT scoreless in the third period.
- The Sharks are facing off against RIT again for the second meeting in a two-game series on January 1.
