SHARKS WIN! Men’s Basketball Beats Army, 90-65

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU men's basketball team had another emphatic home win in the Steinberg Wellness Center Sunday, beating Army, 90-65. With the win, the Sharks are 3-7 heading in to Northeast Conference play, with all three wins coming at home.

  • All five starters scored in double digits in the home win for LIU.
  • The two teams were close in the first five minutes, with Army leading 11-10 with 15:54 to go. But LIU went on an 8-0 run, including back-to-back threes from Ty Flowers and Eral Penn to take a 17-11 lead. The Sharks would not trail again.
  • Over the next 10 minutes, LIU outscored the Knights 18-4, widening the lead to 35-18.
  • Threes from Alex Rivera, Kyndall Davis and Flowers widened that lead to 44-24 with four minutes to play in the half, and the Sharks led, 56-33 at the break.
  • The Sharks shot 53.85 percent from the field in the first half, including a scorching 63 percent from three-point range. LIU went 12-for-19 from behind the arc in the first stanza, and finished with 16 three pointers made, a single-game high for this season.
  • LIU also had just 10 turnovers in the contest, while forcing Army into 18, and scoring 23 points off those turnovers.
  • The Sharks widened the lead to as many as 32 points in the second half (72-40), and though LIU wouldn't shoot as well in the second stanza, they cruised to a 90-65 win in the end.
  • Senior Eral Penn was 8-for-13 from the field, including four three pointers, to lead LIU with 23 points.
  • Graduate student Isaac Kante had 15 points and 11 rebounds, as the only Shark with a double double.
  • Ty Flowers had 17 points and nine rebounds, while Tre Wood had 11 points and a game-high seven assists, along with four rebounds and two steals.
  • Kyndall Davis had 10 points and six rebounds, along with two blocks. Junior Alex Rivera had nine points, all scored from three-point range
  • Freshman Quion Burns had five points and four rebounds, while Andre Washington chipped in five assists in just 16 minutes of action.
  • Up next, the Sharks have a 10-day break before opening NEC action on the road, in a New England road swing. LIU will take on Sacred Heart and Merrimack, Wednesday, December 29 and Friday, December 31.
