LONGWOOD, Fla. – The Long Island University softball team won its fifth straight game Sunday morning, beating North Carolina A&T at the Spring Games, 8-0. Senior pitcher
Tallie Woodson (5-4) had the win on the mound, as she and sophomore
Zoe Estoppey combined for a shutout on the mound, holding the Aggies to just five hits over seven innings.
Junior
Kiana Cisneros was a force at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Sharks. Freshman
Maya Avila and sophomore
Angelina Reno each also had two RBI in the win for LIU.
The Sharks got the scoring started right away, putting on a run on the board in the top of the first tinning. Senior
Patricia Griffin had a one-out single through the right side, and advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs, Cisneros came to the plate and hit a single to right field, and Griffin made it home from second to put LIU up, 1-0.
In the second, junior
Ryleigh Bermea had a double, and came home on junior
Alina Castillo's single to left field to make it 2-0. The Sharks added four runs in the top of the fourth, on an RBI double from Reno, a single from Avila that scored two runs, and an RBI double from Cisneros.
LIU's defense shone in the bottom of the fourth, when the Sharks made a play at home plate to keep NC A&T from scoring with the bases loaded. In the bottom of the sixth, LIU got out of another jam, when with the bases loaded, the Aggies tried to steal home, but Woodson made the play to maintain the shutout.
In the top of the seventh, LIU added two more runs to the total. Cisneros led off with a single, and would score on a double by freshman
Alexis Toledo. Toledo would score on an error two batters later, and the Sharks led, 8-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, Estoppey came in to pitch for the Sharks, and after a leadoff walk, was able to retired the next three batters, clinching the win for LIU, 8-0.
Up next, the Sharks have a two day break, before returning to the field against Cleveland State, Wednesday, March 11 at 12 p.m.
