LONGWOOD, Fla. – The LIU softball team opened the 2020 Spring Games with a split Friday. The Sharks fell to Creighton in the first game of the day, 2-0, before shutting out Charleston Southern, 6-0, to finish the day with a win.
LIU vs. Creighton
Creighton would score the only two runs of the game in the top of the second inning. A leadoff walk and a double put two runners in scoring position. A double to right field brought both runners home, and put the Blue Jays up, 2-0. LIU's lone hit came in the bottom of the first inning.
The Blue Jays' pitcher held LIU to just one hit in 7.0 shutout innings, striking out five. Sophomore
Elena Valenzuela (3-8) had the loss on the mound.
LIU vs. Charleston Southern
The Sharks' offense came to life in the second game of the day, when LIU shut out CSU, 6-0. Senior
Tallie Woodson had the complete game shutout win, giving up just five hits over 7.0 innings, with no runs scored.
Early in the game, it looked like it may be a repeat of earlier in the day, as neither team would get any traction offensively, but LIU got on the board in the fourth. With one out, sophomore
Samantha Garcia singled to center field. Junior
Kiana Cisneros followed that up with a single to left field, and sophomore
Kelsey Day came to the plate. Day cleared the bases with a home run over the left field fence, making it 3-0 Sharks.
LIU added a run in the top of the fifth, when senior
Patricia Griffin had an RBI single through the right side. And two more runs came for the Sharks in the top of the sixth. Junior
Alina Castillo had a single that would score two runners, and LIU led, 6-0.
Woodson would give up just two hits the rest of the game, and the Sharks clinched the win, 6-0.
