Two Home Runs Not Enough for Baseball as Sharks Take on Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.Giovanni Ciaccio went yard on the first pitch of the game but the Long Island University baseball team fell to Hofstra 9-4 in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday afternoon.

Highlights
  • Ciaccio's home run was the fifth of his collegiate career and his first at the Division I level.
  • Cooper Shearon skied his first home run of the year to left field in the sixth inning.
  • Anthony Warneke continued his hot hitting with three singles and a run scored.
  • Christopher Wasson roped two doubles.
  • LIU outhit Hofstra 12-11

How it Happened
Ciaccio was back in the lineup for the first time since the opening series at USC Upstate. The lefty wasted no time in his return, driving the first pitch of the contest over the fence in left center. Anthony Warneke followed up with a single then stole his ninth bag of the year. Carlton Harper stretched his hitting streak to four games with an RBI double down the right field line and the Sharks held a 2-0 advantage heading into the bottom half of the first inning.

Hofstra threatened to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the first, getting runners on the corners with one out. Davyn Adamscheck initiated a five-four-three double play with a pick at third on a short-hop and Andreoli was out of the jam.

The Pride dug into the lead in the third inning without recording a hit. Andreoli walked four batters, allowing a run to score. Patrick Clyne entered in relief and got the third out to keep LIU's edge at one.

Clyne stayed in for the fourth. Hofstra tallied five runs on four hits, taking a 6-2 lead. Another Pride run in the fifth increased the margin to five. Cooper Shearon got one back for the Sharks sixth with a solo home run to left. Hofstra responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Christopher Wasson doubled home Adamscheck in the eighth, narrowing the gap to four. A solo shot from Pride in the bottom of the eighth created an insurmountable deficit.
