Men's Lacrosse Takes on Hofstra in Non-Conference Play on Saturday

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – A longtime rivalry was renewed on Saturday as the Long Island University men's lacrosse team took on Hofstra University in non-conference action at James M. Shuart Stadium. The Sharks were unable to overcome the Pride, falling 14-6.

Despite being separated by just seven miles, Saturday's matchup was the first between the two universities in 30 years. The contest was the 24th all-time meeting in the local rivalry, with Hofstra leading the series 16-8. The Pride entered Saturday's game receiving votes in both the USILA and Inside Lacrosse polls this week.

The Pride jumped out to an early lead when Ryan Tierney scored less than three minutes into the contest. LIU leveled the scoring midway through the stanza when Will Snelders extended his active point streak to 36 games with his fifth goal of the season. The Pride added goals just 15 seconds apart and eventually took a 4-2 lead into the second quarter. In a low scoring period, Doug Chase found the back of the net on a man-up goal for his first tally of the season for the only Shark goal of the second quarter. Hofstra added two goals during the frame and took a 6-3 lead into halftime.

LIU was unable to find the back of the net during the third quarter as the Pride used a 5-0 run to extend the lead to 11-3 entering the fourth quarter. LIU opened the final quarter with three unanswered goals, capped off with Chase's second man-up goal of the game, bringing the Sharks within five goals.

Hofstra responded with three unanswered goals to push the lead back up to eight, putting LIU out of reach the rest of the way.

Snelders and Chase led LIU with two goals apiece, while Nick Grassa and Richie LaCalandra added one goal and one assist each. Alex Russell also recorded one assist for LIU.

LIU will continue its non-conference slate on Tuesday, March 3 at Fairfield University. The Sharks and Stags will face-off under the lights of Rafferty Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
