BROOKVILLE, N.Y.- Alyssa Mallery scored her 200
th career goal behind a five-goal performance, but a second half comeback came up just short as the Long Island University women's lacrosse team fell to Quinnipiac, 13-15 on Sunday afternoon.
For most of the first half, the game was back and forth as the Sharks and Bobcats would trade goals. The Bobcats struck first, scoring a free position goal to take an early lead. Even though Quinnipiac scored again, the Sharks quickly responded just 36 seconds later as
Brianna Feldman scored her first goal of the day.
Amanda Masullo found the back of the net to tie the game a minute later. The Bobcats would take the lead again before
Paige Sherlock scored a free position goal in the 18
th minute of the first half. Quinnipiac went on a two-goal streak but that was ended when
Elise Person scored a free position goal.
The Bobcats tried to get separation with another goal, but Mallery scored twice within two minutes of each other to tie the game at six all with just under 12 minutes left in the first half. Quinnipiac scored, again taking the lead, but Feldman responded with her second goal of the game to tie it for the fourth time in the half. The Bobcats scored one more goal before halftime to go into the break with the one goal advantage.
After five minutes of scoreless play to open up the second half,
Rachel Masullo would add her name to the scoresheet as she tied the game once again. The Bobcats would score four unanswered goals to get some separation and take a four-goal lead. Mallery broke up the Bobcats' run, starting a run for her team as she completed her hat trick. She would score again when Sherlock had a free position attempt, and passed the ball to Mallery. Feldman kept the momentum going for the Sharks when she completed her hat trick just 16 seconds later, and getting the Sharks back within one. The Bobcats scored two more goals, regaining a three-goal lead.
Mallery would send the ball passed the goalkeeper on a free position attempt for her 200
th career goal, and fifth of the game.
Sara Stephens scored a free position goal just a minute later bringing the Sharks within one with five minutes left.
Hailey Duchnowski made two big saves to keep the game a one goal deficit.
Rachel Masullo had a free position attempt, but the Quinnipiac goalkeeper came up with the save. The Bobcats added an insurance goal with 23 second left in the game.
Duchnowski made 14 saves in goal for the second game in a row. In addition to her five goals, Mallery had six draw controls, one caused turnover and two ground balls.
Rachel Masullo had a team-best seven draw controls. Feldman finished the day with four points behind three goals and an assist.
The Sharks are back in action on Saturday, February 29 when they make the trip to Washington D.C. to take on American University. Game time against the Eagles is slated for 12:00 p.m.
