Women's Basketball Battles St. Francis Brooklyn

eiBROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's basketball team fell to St. Francis Brooklyn at home Saturday afternoon in the Steinberg Wellness Center, 71-54. Sophomore Brandy Thomas led LIU with 13 points, while Ryan Wiese had 10 points.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Sharks jumped out to an early lead, when a layup from Kiara Bell put them up, 4-2. The Terriers drained a three pointer in the next possession to go up, 5-4, and wouldn't trail again. A jumper from Thomas cut the lead to one point, 9-8, with just over five minutes left in the quarter, but the Terriers finished the period on a 10-4 run, and led 19-12 at the end of the first.

LIU opened the second period on a 5-0 run, with baskets from Bell and Paulani Tarawa, cutting the gap to 19-17, but SFBK would answer with a 9-0 run, and then outscored LIU, 8-2 in the final two minutes of the second period, taking a 38-23 lead into the halftime break.

The visiting team would start the second half on a 9-1 run, widening the lead to 47-24. From there, the Terriers stayed on top. In the fourth quarter, the Sharks would make a run, scoring eight unanswered points, including five-straight by Zhane Williams, but it wasn't enough to make a dent, and the Sharks fell to the Terriers in the end, 71-54.

SHARK BITES
  • Brandy Thomas shot 50 percent from the field and led LIU with 13 points. She also had six rebounds, and team-highs in both assists (4) and steals (3).
  • Ryan Weise had 10 points for the Sharks, along with seven rebounds, two assists and a block
  • Junior Kiara Bell had 13 rebounds for LIU, along with eight points. The 13 rebounds ties her previous career high.
  • Mia Perkins added nine rebounds, three steals and three assists. The three assists ties her career best as well.
