Umpherville's Two Power Play Goals Lifts Women's Ice Hockey Past Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H.- Carrigan Umpherville scored two power play goals to help the Long Island University women's ice hockey team complete the third period comeback as the Sharks concluded the inaugural regular season defeating Saint Anselm, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Kenzie Harmison was first tested when the Hawks challenged her on a breakaway, but she was not fooled and made the save, keeping it a scoreless game halfway through the first. The Sharks got on the board first in the 18th minute of the opening period when Umpherville found an open Megan Bouveur who initially sent the puck to af Bjur. af Bjur sent it back to Bouveur who took the shot and found the back of the net off the rebound.

Halfway through the second period, Saint Anselm would tie the game on a power play goal. af Bjur had a few looks on net during a Sharks' power play, but the Hawks' goaltender stood tall and made the saves.

The Sharks opened up the third killing off the Hawks' 5-on-3 opportunity. The Hawks would score its second power play goal of the day five minutes into the final period to take a 2-1 lead. That lead would not last long, as 37 seconds later, Umpherville scored her first goal of the day, sending the puck high past the goaltender to tie the game once more. The game was back and forth for the next five minutes until the Sharks went on the power play again. af Bjur won the faceoff, then Umpherville collected the puck, brought it in front of the net and took a beautiful backhanded shot that went passed the goaltender for her second power play goal of the game.

The Hawks were persistent and kept testing Harmison, but she continued to play strong in net. In the final 45 seconds of the game, the Hawks pulled their goaltender, and took two shots before Alva Johnsson put the game away, scoring an empty net goal to extend the lead to 4-2.

Harmison earned her fourth win of the season and finished the day with 33 saves. The Sharks took 31 total shots on net, which was led by Umpherville who had eight. Umpherville had three points on the day behind two goals and an assist. af Bjur also had a mult-point game as she had two assists. Bouveur and Johnsson both scored a goal, while Abby Latorella and Paula Bergström each had an assist.

Saturday's game concluded the Sharks' inaugural regular season. LIU earned the fourth seed in the upcoming New England Women's Hockey Alliance tournament, and will host the fifth seed, Saint Michael's next Wednesday, February 19th. The first-round game will take place at Iceworks in Syosset, N.Y. with puck drop slated for 1:05 p.m.
