Fourth-Quarter Comeback Not Enough for Men's Lacrosse Against Wagner

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Despite a fourth-quarter comeback, the Long Island University men's lacrosse team came up short in overtime against Wagner College by a 9-8 final in non-conference action on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.

The Sharks overcame a 4-1 halftime deficit by scoring seven second-half goals, including a 4-0 run during the final period to take its first lead of the game at 8-7. Despite having momentum, Wagner forced a turnover and took advantage when Stephen Dwyer found the back of the net with 20 seconds remaining. The Seahawks won the ensuing faceoff and appeared to have won the game at the final buzzer but a goal was disallowed due to a crease violation, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Wagner won the opening faceoff and the Seahawks took a timeout after pushing the ball into the attacking zone. Out of the timeout, it was Dwyer again taking a pace behind the extended goal-line and split a double team before skipping home the game-winning goal 43 seconds into the frame to give Wagner the win.

Dwyer led all scorers with four goals on the day for Wagner. For the Sharks, Richie Lacalandra tallied his first career goal and added a highlight-reel diving goal for the go-ahead tally during the fourth-quarter run. Lacalandra was one of four Sharks to score twice, joining Alex Russell, Dylan Villari, and Jake Gillis. Will Snelders posted two assists to extend his active point streak to 34 games. Defensively, Ryan Blume caused four turnovers and recorded a team-best five ground balls and Will Mark made 12 saves while stopping 57-percent of shots on goal.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 when they host St. John's University beginning at 1:00 p.m.
