Ice Hockey Continues NEWHA Play with Weekend Series Against Saint Michael's

BROOKVILLE, N.Y.- The Long Island University women's ice hockey team welcomes Saint Michael's College to Long Island for a New England Women's Hockey Alliance two-game series on Friday, January 17 and Saturday, January 18.

Notes on the Sharks
The Sharks are looking to bounce back after falling twice to league leading Saint Anselm last weekend. Matilda af Bjur scored twice last weekend, once in each game against the Hawks. Stella Scott scored the game-tying goal early in the third period of the first game. Alva Johnsson scored the Sharks' second goal of the second game. Johnsson also assisted on Scott's goal in the first game. af Bjur, Johnsson and Carrigan Umpherville are tied for the most goals this season with seven apiece. Mia McLeod had 30 saves in the first game, and made eight stops coming in for relief during the second game for a total of 38 saves last weekend. Kenzie Harmison started in net on Saturday and recorded 13 saves. The team had a combined 28 blocked shots between the two games.
 
Scouting the Purple Knights
After dropping two games to Sacred Heart last weekend, the Purple Knights are looking to build off a 0-0 tie with Saint Anselm on Tuesday. In the scoreless tie against the Hawks, senior goaltender Vika Simons made 51 saves. The shutout was the fourth of Simons' career, which is a new school record. Her 51 saves mark her fourth career 50-save game. Arianna Boscia took a team-high eight shots. Maeghan Kennard leads the team with six goals this season. Boscia and Jordan Monbouquette are tied for first on the team with 11 points. Boscia has four goals and seven assists while Monbouquette has three goals and eight assists.
 
Last Time Against the Purple Knights
The Sharks have played all five NEWHA opponents in the first half of the inaugural season, and will play them all again before the regular season ends. Last time against the Purple Knights, the Sharks went 1-1, including the first win in program history. The first win was a 5-2 victory where af Bjur, Umpherville, Paula Bergström, Elissa Taylor, and Johnsson all scored and Harmison earned her first career victory. Despite falling to the Purple Knights in the second game, the Sharks finished with 45 shots on goal, while Grace Dima scored the lone goal for the Sharks.

Up Next
The Sharks will be on the road next Friday, January 24 with a trip to the Sports Center of Connecticut to take on Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m. LIU will return home on Saturday, January 25 to close out the weekend against the Pioneers at Iceworks starting at 7:45 p.m.
