Kuzina, Dancenco Win Singles Titles at Hofstra Invitational

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.- The Long Island University women's tennis team competed at the Hofstra Invitational this weekend, and saw successes in the A and B singles as well as a consolation victory in doubles and C singles.
 
In doubles, Valentina Dancenco/Sofiya Kuzina made it to the championship of the A doubles flig1238ht, but fell to Brown/King of Hofstra, 4-6. The two defeated Wagner's Anand/Lugtu, 6-1 in the opening draw followed by defeating Kachkarov/Ruffini of Hofstra 6-3 in the semi-finals.   

Victoria Erechtchenko/Veronika Koudelkova won the consolation final, defeating Bel Aleixendri/Sciarotta of Queens, 6-1. After a first-round bye, Erechtchenko/Koudelkova fell to Ostoja/Carcic of Queens, 3-6. The duo then defeated Wagner's d'Alessandro/Groetsch, 6-4 and Walle/Zaganjor of Hofstra, 6-0 en route to their consolation final victory.
 
Sofiya Kuzina won A singles on Saturday afternoon after defeating her opponent Luisa Aufarth of Queens, 6-0, 6-2 to capture the title. She took down Meagan Brown of Siena, 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals. On Friday, Kuzina defeated her opening draw opponent Nanea Perkins from Siena, 6-3, 6-1 followed by another dominating performance over Madeline Brown from Hofstra 6-0, 6-2.

Valentina Dancenco had a bye in the opening round and then went on to defeat Siena's Anastasia Koniaev 7-5, 6-2. In the semi-finals, she took down Juliana Goehner of Siena, 7-5, 6-2. She faced her teammate Ekaterine Jorjoliani on Sunday in the finals and defeated her, 7-6 (6), 6-4 to capture the B singles title.  
 
Bianca Compuesto had two victories on Friday as she defeated Marisa Ostoja from Queens, and then took down Diana Pinzariu from Wagner, 6-4, 6-2. Jorjoliani defeated Aleksandra Caricic of Queens 6-2, 6-0 and Ronia Dolabany from Hofstra 6-1, 6-2 to move on to the semi-final. Compuesto and Jorjoliani faced each other in the semi-finals, and Jorjoliani would come away victorious, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.
 
Veronika Koudelkova fell in the opening round to Queens' Lovisa Engstrand, 5-7, 7-6, 6-10. She came back and defeated Wagner's Melanie Post, 8-3 in the consolation semi-finals, and went on to win her back draw, defeating Brooklyn Samuels from Hofstra, 8-1. 
 
The Sharks continue fall tournament play in two weeks when they head to Charlotte, N.C. where they will compete in the Charlotte Invitational from October 11-13.
