Rachel Vellis earned her first shut out of the season and freshman forward
Kaitlyn Olton scored her team-high fifth goal of the season to lead the Long Island University field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Lock Haven University on Sunday afternoon.
Vellis made six saves on the day. Olton scored the lone goal of the day and
Emma Braeckmans finished with an assist and two shots.
It was a quiet first half as Braeckmans' had the Sharks' only shot which missed wide. Vellis made two saves throughout the first half to keep the game scoreless. Midway through the third quarter, Olton finished off the rebound of Braeckmans' initial shot to give LIU a 1-0 lead.
The Sharks' defense kept Lock Haven's offense in check during the third quarter as they did not allow the Bald Eagles to take a shot. Lock Haven's offense made a push to try to break through in the fourth quarter with seven shots, but Vellis made four saves throughout the last quarter to keep the Bald Eagles off the board.
The Bald Eagles would not give in and had back-to-back offensive corner opportunities with 24 seconds left. Lock Haven was able to take a shot from the top of the arc, but Vellis made a beautiful kick save to seal the victory, completing the shut out.
The Sharks are on the road next Sunday, October 6 for a matchup against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. Game time at Ulrich Field is slated for 12:00 p.m.
