JACKSONVILLE, Fla.— The LIU volleyball team wrapped up the River City Rumble on Saturday afternoon, falling to Charleston Southern in straight sets (22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22).
Senior
Kora Schaberl posted her second double-double of the season with a career-high 21 kills to go along with 12 digs. She represented the Sharks on the All-Tournament Team. Freshman
Karolina Nova finished with a near double-double effort with nine kills to go with 10 digs. Senior
Amanda Hubbard recorded 29 assists for LIU. Senior
Natalia Rivera registered a match-high 18 digs and freshman
Miranda Strongman added a team-high five blocks.
LIU opened the match strong with an early 9-5 lead. The Buccaneers used three straight points to cut the deficit down to one. The Sharks responded with a 6-2 swing on a kill from Schaberl along with a bevy of Charleston Southern errors to jump ahead 15-10. CSU continued to chip into the LIU lead working the set within three at 16-13 but the Sharks pushed ahead on a four-point run to go up 20-13. The Buccaneers used an extended 9-3 run to cut the LIU lead down to one at 23-22. The Sharks closed the opening set on two straight points with a solo block from Strongman clinching the 25-22 set win.
The second set opened with both teams trading shots at the lead briefly before working to a 11-11 score. LIU looked to create some separation on a kill by Strongman and a block assist to jump ahead 13-11. Charleston Southern answered with a 7-2 stretch to build a 18-15 lead. LIU cut the deficit down to one at 18-17 but the Buccaneers ended the set on a 7-1 run for the 25-18 set win.
Back-and-forth play started the third frame before LIU used kills by Schaberl and Strongman to take a 12-10 lead. Charleston Southern followed with a 12-3 run to take hold of the set at 22-15. The Sharks would cut the deficit down to five at 23-18 on a kill from freshman
Barbora Hoskova but the Buccaneers grabbed the final two points for the 25-18 set victory.
The Buccaneers held the early advantage in the fourth frame with a 7-3 lead. LIU would chip into the lead and eventually used a four-point swing on two kills and two blocks from Nova to jump ahead 12-11. Charleston Southern regained control of the set with a seven-point swing for a 18-12 lead. LIU continued to climb back as the set wore on as Schaberl cut the deficit to one on a kill and pair of service aces for a 23-22 Charleston Southern lead. The Buccaneers would close the set on two straight points for the 25-22 set win and take the match.
