Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Uses Long Ball to Beat Army, 85-72, as Jackson Sets Single Game 3pt Record

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Long Island University men's basketball team had an emphatic team win Saturday afternoon, as the Sharks (3-6) beat Army (4-4) in Christl Arena, 85-72. LIU set a new single-game record with 45 three-pointers attempted, making 18 of them en route to the win. Sophomore Jermaine Jackson Jr. broke a school record that has stood for over two decades in the process, as he made nine three pointers. The previous single-game record of eight was set by LIU Hall-of-Famer Charles Jones in 1998.

GAME BREAKDOWN
Army got going first in the Saturday afternoon matchup, opening the game outscoring LIU 13-5 over the first six minutes. But the Sharks started to get their long range shooting going at the 14-minute mark. Sophomore Virshon Cotton made the first of LIU's 18 three-pointers, and 30 seconds later, Jackson started to make history. The sophomore came into the game and made his first three at 13:26. He proceeded to make five straight three pointers, in what would eventually be a 15-3 run over the next four minutes. Jackson single-handedly put LIU on top, 23-18 with just over nine minutes left in the first half.

Not long after that, Army would start to put together a run. The Black Knights outscored LIU 8-3, cutting the lead back down to three, 31-28. But then junior Ty Flowers and senior Julian Batts decided to join in on the three-point party. Flowers would make two and Batts added one more, as the Sharks went on a 13-2 run over two minutes, that would eventually give LIU a 44-34 lead at the halftime break.

The home team would start the second half on a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to 44-41, but two more Sharks would drain threes: Cotton and senior Raiquan Clark both hit threes to give LIU a 50-43 lead, and stall Army's momentum. And Jashaun Agosto soon became the sixth LIU player to hit a three, as he drained one with 12:33 to go, that pushed the Sharks' lead to 10 points, 57-47.

Jackson would set the school record a few minutes later, as a part of a 17-8 run by LIU that put them up, 71-55, with 7:47 to play.

In the final three minutes of the game, all of LIU's points came at the free throw line, as Army tried to foul their way back into the game. The Sharks would go 10-for-12 from the charity stripe in the final minutes, eventually clinched the win, 85-72.
