STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The third-seeded Long Island University field hockey team saw its season come to an end on Friday, Nov. 8 during the Northeast Conference semifinals, falling to second-seeded Rider University by a 3-0 margin at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.
Rider took an early advantage that LIU was unable to recover from, scoring the game's opening goal just 37 seconds into the match off of a penalty corner. The 1-0 margin carried into halftime before the Broncs put the game away for good during the second half. During the third quarter, Rider extended its lead on a penalty stroke and added a final tally late off of another penalty corner to take a 3-0 lead with 7:41 to play.
LIU had a great opportunity to cut the deficit in half during the third quarter when they earned a penalty stroke during the 42nd minute, but Broncs goalkeeper Lena Vandam stopped sophomore
Michaela Zabicki's attempt to keep the Sharks scoreless.
Rider held a 13-3 advantage in shots on the afternoon, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. The Broncs also garnered five penalty corners to just four for the Sharks. Freshman
Felicia King tallied one shot on goal, while junior
Sammy Bell registered one shot attempt. In goal, junior
Rachel Vellis made seven saves.
The Sharks conclude the 2019 season with a 7-10 overall record and a 4-2 mark in NEC play during the regular season.
