Volleyball Travels to Bryant, Merrimack This Weekend

SMITHFIELD, R.I.— The Long Island University travels to New England for a two-matches in the penultimate weekend of the regular season. The Sharks open on Friday, November 8 at Bryant for a 6:00 p.m. first serve. LIU closes the weekend with a 5:00 p.m. match at Merrimack on Saturday, November 9.

NOTES ON THE SHARKS

LIU went 1-1 in the split week in Brooklyn. The Sharks suffered a four-set setback to rival, St. Francis Brooklyn last Wednesday before closing out the week with a sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson in the annual Dig Pink match on Saturday. LIU stands at 7-5 in Northeast conference play with four matches left in the regular season.

Rookie outside hitter Karolina Nova was named Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season on Monday. Nova tallied 4.14 kills per set and added 3.29 digs per set this past week. The Pribham, Czech Republic native tallied a team-high five service aces.

Junior Masa Zirojevic paced the offense with 5.14 kills per set on the week, tallying a career-high 21 kills against the Terriers. Senior Amanda Hubbard registered 11.43 assists per set and 3.57 digs per set and earned her fifth double-double of the season against St. Francis. Sophomore Anastasia Scott tallied a team-high 6.14 assists this past week.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS

Bryant comes into the weekend 15-14 on the season and sit second in the NEC standings with a 10-3 league record. The Bulldogs boast a 7-2 record on their home court in 2019. As a team, Bryant has recorded a league-high 160 service aces on the season.

Rookie outside hitter Riley James ranks second in the NEC with .40 aces per set. James also leads the Bryant offense with 2.69 kills per set. Sophomore outside hitter Caroline Kennedy has registered 2.67 kills per set on a .280 hitting percentage. In the Bulldogs two-setter system, junior Alisi Motu'apuaka has contributed 5.44 assists per set and freshman Mia Cegol has added 4.08 digs per set. Junior libero Erika Ward leads the Bryant offense with 3.70 digs per set.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS

Merrimack stands at 1-19 in their first season at the Division I level. The Warriors will take on Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday night before matching up against the Sharks.

Senior Catherine Flaherty paces the Merrimack offense with 2.14 kills per set. Senior setter Rosie Sperduto has dished out a team-high 5.62 assists per set. Rookie libero Taelyr Czech leads the Warrior defense with 3.05 digs per set.

UP NEXT

The Sharks come back to Brooklyn to close out the regular season next weekend. LIU will host Saint Francis U on Friday, November 15. The team will honor its senior class for Senior Day prior to the 7:00 p.m. first serve. A matchup against Robert Morris on Saturday, November 16 at 3:00 p.m. closes out the weekend.
