Women's Basketball Downed By Stony Brook

BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The Long Island University women's basketball team took on local foe, Stony Brook at the Steinberg Wellness Center on Wednesday, falling to the Seawolves, 80-49. Sophomore Kiara Bell led LIU with a season-high 16 points while junior Mia Perkins added 11 points to go along with six rebounds and four blocks.

GAME BREAKDOWN

The Seawolves opened the game with the first 13 points for the early lead. LIU responded with an eight-point run shortly after led by four points from Bell to make it a five point game, 13-8 with 2:01 to go in the quarter. Stony Brook got the last basket of the quarter for a seven point lead, 15-8 into the break. 

Stony Brook extended its lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter, taking a 14-point lead at the 7:53 mark in the quarter. Bell led the Sharks with three baskets on a 6-2 stretch just before the halfway point of the quarter to make it a 10-point game, 26-16. The Seawolves put together one last first-half run with an eight-point stretch late to solidify the lead into the half.

LIU looked to bounce back in the second half, shooting 40.7% from the field in the final two quarters. But Stony Brook continued to click offensively, shooting 52.8% from the floor in the second half to earn the wire-to-wire victory over the Sharks.

  • Bell set a new season-high and tied her career-high in scoring with 16 points against the Seawolves. She also set a new career-high in made field goals with eight in the game.
  • Perkins tied her season-high in scoring with 11 points including her first three-point field goal in the fourth quarter. She also added a career-high four blocks for the Sharks.
  • Johnson finished in double figures for the second straight game with 10 points for the Sharks.
  • Sophomore Ryan Weise dished out a team-high five assists.
  • LIU finished with 13 steals on the defensive end against the Seawolves. Sophomore Brandy Thomas led the way with a career-high five steals.
UP NEXT

The Sharks are back in action at the Steinberg Wellness Center on Saturday, November 30 with a 2:00 p.m. contest against another local foe in Hofstra.
