BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The Long Island University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-13) sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson in the annual Dig Pink match at the Steinberg Wellness Center on Saturday. The Sharks improve to 8-16 overall and 7-5 in the Northeast Conference with the win.
LIU registered a .319 hitting percentage as a team against the Knights. Three Sharks finished with double-digit kill in the win. Junior
Masa Zirojevic registered a match-high 15 kills and added six digs. Rookies
Barbora Hoskova and
Miranda Strongman added 11 kills each. Senior
Amanda Hubbard dished out 39 assists and added nine digs in the near double-double effort. Sophomore
Anastasia Scott tallied a team-high 22 digs and freshman
Karolina Nova recorded 12 digs for the Sharks.
The first set opened with both teams trading points early. LIU found it's footing offensively with an 11-2 stretch led by a pair of kills from junior
Kristina Mamic and Zirojevic to take a 16-7 lead. The Sharks continued to pace the opening set, closing with a 5-1 stretch led by a pair of kills by Hoskova for a 25-13 opening set win.
FDU began with a strong start, earning the first four points on the serve. The Sharks offense responded with a 10-2 run led by four kills apiece from Hoskova and Zirojevic for the 10-6 lead. The Knights continued to hand around eventually cutting the deficit to two points at 16-14 in the set. LIU capped the second set with a 9-0 closing run paced by four kills from Zirojevic for the 25-14 set win. The Sharks tallied a match-high .350 hitting percentage in the second set.
Momentum carried over for the Sharks to start the third set with an 8-2 start as Strongman led the way with three kills. FDU closed in on the deficit from there with a 6-1 run to make it a one-point match at 9-8. LIU answered with an 8-0 run to gain control of the set as a kill from Nova pushed the lead to 17-8. The Sharks commanded the lead from there on out, using one final 6-2 stretch with a kill from Hoskova sealing the 25-13 set win and the match.

The Sharks are set to head up to New England next weekend. LIU opens the weekend on Friday, November 8 against Bryant. First serve from the Chace Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
