Volleyball Set To Face FDU Saturday Evening

HACKENSACK, N.J.— The Long Island University volleyball team begins the month of October with a trip to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, October 5 for a 5:00 p.m. match at the Rothman Center.

NOTES ON THE SHARKS

LIU opened NEC play with a pair of five-set victories against CCSU and Sacred Heart. In the win over the Blue Devils on Friday night in New Britain, the Sharks registered a season-high 66 kills. Saturday's rally against the Pioneers saw LIU command the net with a season-high 13 total blocks.

The Sharks were rewarded for a strong showing to start conference play, sweeping the league's weekly honors. Senior Kora Schaberl was named Molten/NEC Player of the Week, sophomore Anastasia Scott earned Molten/NEC Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Karolina Nova garnered her second straight Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week nod.

Schaberl registered a 4.60 kills per set average on a .246 hitting percentage to go with 2.80 digs per set. The Austria native posted a pair of 20-plus kill performances on the weekend and recorded two double-doubles.

Scott recorded a team-high 4.60 digs per set on the weekend. The sophomore registered a match-high 26 digs in the Sharks five-set win over CCSU on Friday night. She followed that up with 20 digs in the five-set triumph over Sacred Heart on Saturday.

Nova tallied 4.30 kills per set on a .245 hitting percentage and added 3.20 digs per set and recorded a team-high four service aces. The Czech Republic added a pair of double-double performances and has tallied a double-double in four straight matches.

Senior setter Amanda Hubbard also posted a pair of double-doubles this past weekend for the Sharks. She averaged 10.30 assists per set and added 2.50 digs along with five total blocks on the weekend.

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS

FDU comes into the weekend fresh off their first win of the season, a straight set sweep at Manhattan on Tuesday evening. The Knights will take on St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday afternoon before matching up against the Sharks on Saturday.

Junior outside hitter Magdalena Maksimovic paces the FDU offense with 2.38 kills per set. Rookie outside hitter Mujay Mambu has added 2.37 kills per set for the Knights. Sophomore Jessica Throckmorton has recorded a team-high 16 service aces on the season.

Defensively, sophomore libero Jaelyn Young leads the team with 3.76 digs per set. Sophomore outside hitter Sophia Spiridonakos has registered a team-high 35 total blocks at the net.

LIU leads the all-time series against the Knights, 32-13.

UP NEXT

The Sharks travel out to Pennsylvania to take on Saint Francis U and Robert Morris next weekend.  LIU will meet the Red Flash first on Friday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. before concluding the weekend against the Colonials at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12.
