BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The Long Island University volleyball team is set for a two-match week in Brooklyn this week. The Sharks begin with a 6:00 p.m. match Wednesday, October 30 against local rival, St. Francis Brooklyn before hosting Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, November 2 at 4:00 p.m. at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
DIG PINK SATURDAY
Saturday's contest against Fairleigh Dickinson will be LIU's annual Dig Pink matchup at the Steinberg Wellness Center. There will be prizes raffled off during the match with all proceeds going to The Side-Out Foundation.
NOTES ON THE SHARKS
LIU is coming off a pair of losses this past weekend. The Sharks hosted CCSU on Friday night, falling in a five-set thriller. LIU then traveled to Sacred Heart on Saturday, falling in straight sets to a Pioneer team that has won seven straight matches. The Sharks now stand at 6-4 in Northeast Conference action.
Freshman
Karolina Nova paced the LIU offense in the pair of matches, registering 4.38 kill per set. She posted a season-high 26 kill in the setback against CCSU. Nova also registered 2.88 digs per set on the weekend.
Senior
Kora Schaberl contributed 3.57 kills per set and hit .242 in seven sets for the Sharks. She also added 2.43 digs per set. Senior
Amanda Hubbard dished out 8.62 assists per set and contributed 2.00 digs per set. Junior
Masa Zirojevic added 2.62 digs per set for the LIU defense. Sophomore
Anastasia Scott led the team with 5.75 digs per set.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
St. Francis Brooklyn comes into Wednesday's match 10-15 overall and 3-7 in NEC action. The Terriers are coming off a pair of straight-set defeats to Sacred Heart and Bryant this past weekend. LIU earned a four-set victory over St. Francis Brooklyn in the first meeting of the season back on October 16.
Sophomore outside hitter Una Stevic leads the team with 2.67 kills per set on the season. Senior middle blockers Wies Hurkmans and Taris Pittman rank in the top-three in the NEC in hitting percentage with a .366 and .360 clip respectively. Sophomore libero Kizzy Rodriguez paces the Terrier defense with 4.50 digs per set.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
FDU enters the weekend 1-9 in NEC play and will take on the Terriers on Friday night before the Saturday matchup against the Sharks. LIU swept the first meeting between the two team back on Saturday, October 5 in Hackensack.
Junior outside hitter Magdalena Maksimovic has averaged a team leading 2.39 kills per set this season. Junior setter McKenna Setterlund leads the way with 5.39 assists per set. Sophomore Jaelyn Young has recorded a team-high 3.18 digs per set and sophomores Brooke Stevens and Sophia Spiridonakos have both added a team-high 49 total blocks on the season.
UP NEXT
The Sharks hit the road next weekend for a trip up to New England. LIU opens the two-match weekend at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8 at Bryant and then closes out the weekend with a 5:00 p.m. match at Merrimack on Saturday, November 9.
