NEW HAVEN, Conn.- Paula Bergström scored her first career goal, and
Mia McLeod had 50 saves in net, including a shut out in the third period, as the Long Island University women's ice hockey team closed out its weekend series at Yale, falling 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.
In a day of career firsts,
Abby Latorella also added her first career assist, which came on Bergström's goal. McLeod's 50 saves marks a new career and season high for her. The third period shutout was the first time this season the Sharks did not allow a goal in an entire period.
Offensively, the Sharks took a season-high 17 shots on goal. LIU took five shots in the first period, seven in the second period and six in the third period.
Morgan Schauer took a team high six shots, including three in the third period. Latorella,
Julia Hoffmann,
Renee Hoffmann and
Matilda af Bjur each finished with two shots. Bergström,
Linn Thomsen,
Carrigan Umpherville, and
Alva Johnsson closed out the day with a shot each.
The Sharks killed off three of the Bulldogs' five powerplays on the day. The Blue and Gold won 21 faceoffs, led by af Bjur who won 10 and Johnsson who won nine.
Megan Bouveur and
Julia Hoffmann each won one.
The Sharks open up New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) play next weekend when they head to South Burlington, Vt. to take on the Saint Michael's Purple Knights in a two-game series. The first game of the weekend is on Friday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m.
