Bell's Double Overtime Goal Lifts Field Hockey Over Sacred Heart

BROOKVILLE, N.Y.- Sammy Bell scored her second goal of the day on a breakaway just two minutes into the second overtime frame to lead the Long Island University field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 double overtime victory over Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon.
 
Just under three minutes into the first quarter, Bell got the Sharks on the board after collecting the pass from Jonna Klein-Holte and driving the ball home from the top of the circle. The Pioneers evened the score just five minutes later. Kaitlyn Olton took a shot in the first quarter that was saved by the goal keeper. Rachel Vellis had her first save of the day to keep the game tied.
 
The Pioneers broke open the tie early in the second quarter. Emma Braeckmans had a chance to tie the game before halftime, but her shot was blocked.
 
The Sharks opened the third quarter with three penalty corners and were able to get two shots off, which were saved and blocked. The Pioneers had two penalty corners and took one shot which Vellis saved. Alexis Ruiz could not capitalize on a penalty stroke, as the Pioneers would hold onto their 2-1 lead going into the fourth quarter.
 
Ruiz had three back-to-back shots early in the fourth quarter, all of which were saved by the goalkeeper, but was able to find the back of the net to tie the game after deflecting in a pass from Klein-Holte. Braeckmans had a chance to win the game late in the fourth, but her shot was saved.
 
The Pioneers offense came to life in the first overtime period, but Vellis stood strong and made three saves in a row to keep the game tied. Bell had one shot in the first overtime, but missed wide. On a breakaway two minutes into the second overtime frame, Bell scored the game winning goal to give the Sharks their third Northeast Conference win of the season.
 
The Sharks are back in action on Sunday, October 27 when they head to Smithfield, R.I. to take on the Bryant Bulldogs. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
