Brooklyn Athletic Center

The largest building project in the history of the Brooklyn campus, the $45 million, 114,000-square-foot Brooklyn Athletic Center opened in January 2006.

Located at the corner of Ashland and DeKalb Avenues, the Brooklyn Athletic Center serves as a hub for student activities and athletic events. The facility is home to LIU’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, women’s swimming, women’s volleyball, and women’s fencing programs.

The LIU men’s basketball team christened the new home court with a 63–60 victory over Sacred Heart on Jan. 26, 2006. The official grand opening of the Brooklyn Athletic Center took place during the LIU vs. St. Francis (N.Y.) men’s basketball game on Feb. 27, 2006 — a 67–64 LIU win.

The Brooklyn Athletic Center features a 2,500-seat arena, an NCAA regulation-size swimming pool, and a state-of-the-art fitness center and weight room. In addition, two tennis courts and a running track are located on the rooftop.

The facility also includes a wellness center designed to serve the growing Brooklyn community, offering cardiac rehabilitation, orthopedic therapy, and asthma education services. The pool is equipped with a hydraulic floor to support aqua therapy programs.

In addition to athletics, the facility serves as a venue for civic and community events. The Brooklyn Athletic Center has hosted the VH1 Celebrity Hip-Hop Basketball Classic, as well as various local high school sporting events.
