MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — The Long Island University men's volleyball team (7-9, 1-1 NEC) claimed its second consecutive victory on Monday night, defeating King University 3-0 at the Barry U Invite in Miami Shores, Florida.
Monday's opening set was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams tied at 25 late in the match. Following a service ace by senior Isaac Benka, LIU went up 1-0 in the match with a 27-25 win after a Tornado attack error.
LIU never trailed in the second set, aided by an 8-3 scoring run to begin the frame. Freshman Ike Vernon capped off the first set with a kill, giving LIU a 25-19 win and a 2-0 match lead.
With the Sharks holding a late 20-19 lead in the final set, LIU scored five of the final seven points to capture a 25-21 win in the third set, completing the sweep of King.
Vernon led LIU with 22 kills, while redshirt sophomore Heston Cabinian and senior Kale Spencer each totaled double-digit kills, posting 11 and 10, respectively. Spencer paced the Sharks with 11 digs, sophomore Owen Holowecky totaled 41 assists, and Benka and senior Drew McNellis posted three total blocks each.
LIU returns to action in its second match of the Barry U Invite on Tuesday, March 10, at 5 p.m. when it takes on Barry University.
