BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's lacrosse team (1-0) scored two goals in the final two minutes and edged Mount Saint Mary's College (0-1),14-12, on Friday afternoon in its season opener at Shark Stadium.
Drew Togno and
Ben McIsaac led the Sharks in scoring with three goals apiece.
After squandering a 9-4 third-quarter lead, the Sharks and Mountaineers were tied 12-12 with less than two minutes remaining. As Mount Saint Mary's possessed the ball looking to take its first lead since the first quarter, senior captain
Tyler Davide forced a turnover and collected a ground ball to spring a counterattack.
Davide assisted
Ryan Baudo, who scored the game-winning goal with 1:56 remaining, putting the Sharks up 13-12.
Aidan Zuhoski added an unassisted goal with 46 seconds left, cementing the 14-12 LIU victory.
Goalie
Tyler Gresh made 16 saves. LIU outshot Mount Saint Mary's 39-34 and edged the Mountaineers winning 14 of 26 faceoffs.
Zuhoski and
Cameron Connolly each scored two goals with two assists.
Khairi Sears,
Antony Tsakos, and
Kyle Cochran each added a goal apiece.
LIU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, versus Monmouth University. Opening faceoff at Shark Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
