EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's ice hockey team (14-14-1, NEWHA 12-10-1) defeated the league-leading Saint Anselm College Hawks (15-13-1, NEWHA 15-7-1) Friday afternoon 3-2 in overtime. Freshman
Addison Robillard's overtime goal is her fourth goal of the season and second overtime goal in seven days after scoring the game-winning goal against Franklin Pierce University last Friday, Jan. 30.
The first period of play ended in a 0-0 draw, with the Hawks outshooting the Sharks 15-10. Senior,
Ryane Kearns opened scoring in the game during a power play, 9:42 into the second period assisted by
Emma Mörtl.
Around five minutes later,
Grace Babington doubled the lead off an assist by
Ella Knewtson at 16:39. After the Hawk's earned a power play late in the second period, Saint Anselm's Lucy DeCoteau cut the lead with 3:21 remaining to end the period trailing the Sharks, 2-1.
Both teams limited the other's shots on goal throughout the third period, with the Sharks outshooting the Hawks only 9-7. Saint Anselm evened the score with 2:16 left in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Robillard netted the game-winning goal only 12 seconds into the overtime period after a face-off win from Babington to defeat the Hawks.
The Sharks had 23 blocks in the game to assist
Victoria Rutnik and her 29 saves, earning her seventh win of the season in 10 games played. LIU has won seven of their last nine games.
The Sharks will be honoring their six seniors before they face off against Saint Anselm for the final game of the weekend pair Saturday, Feb. 7. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the ceremony for the seniors is set to begin around 1:35 p.m.
